Public broadcaster TVRI is urging the public to enjoy the 2026 FIFA World Cup in a healthy manner without betting, amid growing concerns over the rise of online gambling in Indonesia ahead of the world's biggest football tournament.
TVRI 2026 World Cup Broadcast Media Center Coordinator Ezki Suyanto said in a written statement in Jakarta on Monday that the government under Prabowo Subianto's leadership is paying serious attention to efforts to prevent and handle online gambling.
"President Prabowo has repeatedly explained in various forums and on various occasions that online gambling is a serious threat that undermines the nation's order. The President's message is a common thread: online gambling must be eradicated," he said.
He added that TVRI, as a public broadcaster, has a responsibility to educate the public so that the World Cup euphoria isn't exploited as a platform for betting. He believes the joy of watching football should be a healthy, shared pastime.
