United Arab Emirates: Sharjah flooded again after heavy overnight rains

Heavy overnight rains caused further flooding and disrupted traffic in Sharjah, with pedestrians forced to navigate wide stretches of water as rescue teams battled the latest bout of severe weather in the United Arab Emirates. Police and pumping trucks were deployed across the emirate to clear standing water and manage traffic as a new storm system moved across the country on March 27. Such rainfall has significant consequences in a country where flash floods can quickly paralyze transportation and submerge roads and underpasses below. According to regional forecasts, the storm was part of a larger weather system that also affected Dubai, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, and Abu Dhabi. The UAE National Meteorological Centre had warned of thunderstorms, strong winds, and a continued risk of flooding, particularly in exposed urban areas and wadis (dry riverbeds). Authorities in Sharjah had already activated an emergency plan earlier in the week in response to the rains, mobilizing approximately 1,200 personnel and heavy equipment in anticipation of this new period of heavy rainfall. Forecasters predict that Friday morning will mark the final and most intense phase of this weather front, before a gradual easing of the conditions.
