A study conducted by scientists from Cambridge University has shown that Barrett's syndrome, also known as "Barrett's esophagus," is an inevitable stage in the development of the most common type of esophageal cancer.

Esophageal cancer is considered one of the most dangerous types of cancer, mostly due to its discovery at late stages. It has long been known to be associated with "Barrett's esophagus," a change in the lining of the esophagus that can be observed during a medical examination. However, this sign has not been detected in many patients, raising doubts about its actual role.

In the new study, scientists analyzed data from more than 3,000 patients and conducted a genetic study of the tumors. They found that all tumors had the same molecular markers, regardless of whether Barrett's esophagus was visible at diagnosis or not. This suggests that the precancerous stage is always present, but may disappear as the disease progresses.

Furthermore, the researchers discovered biomarkers (specific proteins) capable of detecting this latent stage even when it is not apparent during routine medical examinations, and they say that this discovery may open new horizons for early diagnosis and prevention of cancer, when treatment is then significantly more effective.
