Algeria: The African Union condemns the attempted attack in Blida

In a statement released Tuesday, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, denounced "in the strongest possible terms" the double attack reported on April 13, 2026.

He also expressed his solidarity with the Algerian authorities and population.

The day before, several media outlets had reported an attempted double suicide attack in this city located about fifty kilometers from Algiers.

These incidents reportedly occurred in a context of high security, while Pope Leo XIV was visiting the capital.

At this stage, the Algerian authorities have not officially communicated on the facts, and no claim of responsibility has been registered.

Conflicting accounts

According to various local sources, the exact circumstances remain uncertain. Some accounts mention the intervention of security forces who neutralized the attackers, while others speak of detonations linked to explosive devices.

This information has not been independently verified.

Algeria has not experienced any major attacks in recent years, although the terrorist threat persists at a low level.
