Benin's first surf school paves the way on the coast

On the Beninese coast, long untouched by the world of board sports, a pioneering initiative is gradually changing attitudes. At the heart of this movement is Samuel Vox, founder of the Cotonou Surf School, the first institution dedicated to teaching surfing in the country.

Convinced of the ocean's potential as a space for discovery, freedom and personal development, Samuel Vox decided to transform his passion for surfing into a structuring project.

Its ambition: to offer young Beninese people and travelers an opportunity to discover this sport, while showcasing the country's coastline. The initiative thus aims to promote and develop surfing in Benin, anchoring it in a sustainable local dynamic.

A teaching approach adapted to local realities

The beginnings were not without their difficulties. One of the main challenges lay in the absence of a true surfing culture in Benin. Little known to the general public, this sport required significant awareness-raising efforts. Added to this were material constraints: access to suitable boards, the provision of equipment, and the securing of practice areas presented major challenges.

To meet the specific needs of the Beninese context, the Cotonou Surf School has developed a tailored teaching approach. Lessons take into account the wave conditions in Cotonou and are designed to be progressive, accessible, and safe. The instruction goes beyond simple technique: it incorporates values of sharing, respect for the environment, and the promotion of local identity.

A real social and tourism impact

The school quickly generated positive results. On a social level, it allowed many young people to train, some of whom in turn became instructors, thus opening up new professional opportunities.

From a tourism perspective, it attracts visitors seeking authentic experiences, helping to enhance the region's appeal. It also contributes to fostering a sense of pride and belonging within the community.

Today, surfing in Benin is still developing, but progress is visible. Young people's interest is growing, local initiatives are multiplying, and the potential of the coastline is gaining recognition.

Looking ahead, Samuel Vox aims to develop international partnerships, strengthen the training of supervisors, and organize large-scale events.

Its objective: to position Benin as an emerging surfing destination in West Africa, and to make this sport a sustainable lever for tourism, education and social cohesion.
