Cameroon: Parliament adopts the creation of a vice-presidential post

Cameroon has adopted a new constitutional provision allowing the President of the Republic to choose a Vice-President.

On Saturday, members of parliament and senators meeting in congress adopted the bill proposed by the ruling party and already approved in committee. The text passed by an overwhelming majority.

The country is transitioning to a new institutional architecture after several decades.

This constitutional revision had been denounced the day before by opposition leader Maurice Kamto during a lengthy speech.

The leader of the MRC spoke of a "constitutional coup" while promising a national petition to gather the people's opinion.

According to the opposition's interpretation, President Paul Biya, 93, now has a free hand to designate a successor.
