Uganda must destroy more than 5 million doses of expired anti-covid vaccines.
The products were acquired thanks to a loan from the World Bank. The quantity represents 6.7 million euros.
While the destruction of expired vaccines can cost up to $8 per kilo according to the World Health Organization.
Health ministry officials in Kampala point to the late delivery of these doses, which have a very short expiry date.
But storage conditions and public reluctance towards vaccines are also among the causes of this waste.
Even though the Ugandan health minister stated in October that some 59% of the eligible Ugandan population is fully vaccinated against Covid-19.
Other drugs, including antiretrovirals valued at $8.6 million, have expired due to changes in WHO treatment recommendations.
