In a rapidly developing course of negotiations between the United States and Iran, US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that an agreement with Tehran is scheduled to be signed on Sunday, noting that the Strait of Hormuz will be opened immediately after the signing.
Trump wrote in a post on his social media platform “Truth Social”: “The agreement is scheduled to be signed tomorrow, and immediately after the signing, the Strait of Hormuz will be opened to everyone.”
In contrast, Iran said on Saturday that the signing of a framework peace agreement with the United States could take place in the coming days, dismissing claims made by Pakistan, the mediator in the talks, that the signing could be completed within the next 24 hours.
Iranian state media quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei as saying that the memorandum of understanding brokered by Islamabad would not be signed on Sunday, but that its signing in the coming days was “not out of the question.”
Baqai added that setting a precise date for the signing requires a degree of caution in light of what he described as hesitation on the part of the other side, reflecting the continued existence of some outstanding details despite progress in the negotiations.
In a related context, media outlets quoted the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman as saying that the Iranian negotiating team does not intend to visit Pakistan or Geneva in the next few days, indicating that there are no imminent moves related to the signing process.
For his part, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that the United States and Iran had reached a framework for a peace agreement to end the months-long war in the Middle East, stressing that Pakistan was preparing for an electronic signing within the next 24 hours, to be followed by technical talks next week.
Sharif : “We are closer to a peace agreement than ever before,” adding that his country will begin the signing procedures as soon as the final version is completed, followed by a course of technical talks during the next week.
He also expressed his gratitude to the United States and Iran for their commitment during the negotiations, and to the countries that supported the diplomatic efforts, stressing his confidence that this agreement “will form a solid foundation for lasting peace.”
In the same context, Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani discussed , during a telephone call with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif , the latest developments in the region and Pakistani mediation efforts aimed at reducing escalation and enhancing security and stability, in addition to cooperation relations between the two countries and ways to support them.
The Qatari official expressed his country’s satisfaction with the progress made in the negotiations and the announcement by the Pakistani mediation of reaching the final text of the peace agreement, expressing Doha’s hope that the American and Iranian sides will sign the agreement soon, and reiterating Qatar’s full support for efforts aimed at ending the crisis by peaceful means and reaching a comprehensive agreement that achieves sustainable peace in the region.
Pakistan is leading mediation efforts between the United States and Iran to reach an agreement to end the war that broke out on February 28.
