Dr. Oleg Baiu, a gastroenterologist, points out that the development of stomach ulcers depends on many factors, the most important of which is diet. He identifies foods that may increase inflammation and the likelihood of developing ulcers.
XAccording to him, spicy and highly seasoned foods, such as peppers, mustard, and chili peppers, are among the most dangerous factors, as they stimulate the secretion of hydrochloric acid, increasing the acidity of gastric juices and raising the risk of damage to the mucous membrane. They may also negatively affect the sphincter muscle, leading to gastroesophageal reflux disease, which is itself linked to mucous membrane damage.
He added: “Fatty and fried foods come next, as they place an additional burden on the digestive system and slow down the digestion process, which leads to food staying in the stomach for a longer period and increased acidity, thus increasing the risk of damage to the mucous membrane and the formation of ulcers over time.”
He pointed out that caffeinated beverages, especially coffee and energy drinks, are another risk factor, as they stimulate acid secretion and accelerate stomach emptying, which increases pressure on its walls.
He continued: “Alcohol deserves special attention, as it is one of the most harmful substances to the stomach lining, as it weakens protective mechanisms, increases blood vessel permeability, and exacerbates inflammation. Regular consumption can also lead to erosive gastritis and stomach ulcers.”
He added that highly acidic foods, such as citrus fruits, tomatoes, apples and vinegar, may increase the risk of developing ulcers, especially when eaten on an empty stomach.
He also pointed out that sweetened soft drinks constitute an additional burden, as they contain carbon dioxide and large amounts of sugar, which increases pressure inside the stomach, disrupts the balance of beneficial bacteria, and stimulates inflammation.
He also pointed out that foods containing trans fats, such as fast food and margarine, raise the level of inflammation in the body and negatively affect the mucous membrane, reducing its protective capacity and increasing the risk of chronic damage.
For prevention, the doctor stressed the importance of following a balanced diet, avoiding overeating, and paying attention to the diet, especially for those who suffer from gastritis or are predisposed to it.
