Guinea-Bissau: Activist Luis Balanta found dead near the capital

In Guinea-Bissau, Vigàrio Luis Balanta, president of the Pó di Terra movement, was found dead. Media reports indicate he was violently attacked.

His lifeless body was discovered near N'dam, at least 30 kilometers from Bissau, the capital.

The activist was one of the main players in the protest against the transition that followed the November 2025 coup in the West African country.

His revolutionary movement, composed mainly of young people, had been demanding the publication of the results of the legislative and presidential elections of November 23 of last year in Guinea-Bissau.

Vigàrio Luis Balanta was the spearhead of several demonstrations organized against the ruling junta in Bissau, accusing the transitional authorities of repressing the protests.

His death has fueled speculation about the possible involvement of individuals close to the military authorities, who have promised to quickly shed light on the circumstances of his disappearance.

For the president of the Guinean League for Human Rights, the execution of the activist is not only a crime, but a worrying sign of the risks taken by defenders of fundamental rights in the country.
