A recent study has revealed that vanilla, which is widely used to give a distinctive flavor to desserts, has important health benefits.

The study showed that vanilla, thanks to its active compound vanillin , possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce cell damage caused by reactive oxygen species. Researchers suggest this mechanism is linked to the prevention of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some types of cancer.

Preclinical studies in cells and animals have shown that vanillin and Vanilla planifolia extracts may have anticancer and antidiabetic properties, protect the heart and nerves, support antioxidant defenses, and influence inflammatory pathways. Additionally, vanillin possesses antimicrobial activity and may be beneficial in promoting wound healing.

However, scientists warn that these results are premature, and that vanilla cannot yet be considered a proven treatment for humans, as clinical studies are still needed to confirm its effects.
