Nigeria: Coup plot trial to resume on May 8

The military trial related to the foiled 2025 coup plot in Nigeria will resume on May 8, a spokesman for the Defense headquarters told AFP on Monday.

Thirty-six officers are accused of attempting to overthrow the government in power.

The court-martial officially opened last Friday at a military facility in the capital, Abuja. The defendants appeared before newly sworn-in judges at an initial hearing dedicated to opening the proceedings.

The upcoming hearings will be held behind closed doors, without media access, stated military spokesman Major General Samaila Uba. This decision underscores the sensitivity of the case, in an already tense security context.

Meanwhile, six civilians are on trial this week before the Federal High Court in Abuja for their alleged involvement in the plot. All have pleaded not guilty.

Nigeria, independent since 1960, has experienced several military coups throughout its history, spending much of the 20th century under junta rule. The transition to civilian rule in 1999 marked a major turning point, ushering in a period of relative democratic stability.
