Dr. Andrei Matyukhin, an infectious disease specialist, stated that mosquitoes can transmit threadworm disease, a parasitic disease, to humans.

The doctor explains that threadworm disease is a parasitic infection caused by roundworms transmitted by mosquitoes. Dogs and cats are the most commonly affected animals, while humans are not a permanent host for this parasite, as the larvae cannot mature and develop sexually inside the human body. Therefore, the parasite dies inside the human, but it may cause health problems during this process.

He adds: “This disease often appears as a hard, mobile skin protrusion under the skin, in the form of a nodule or bump. This condition often appears on the head, neck, chest, arms, or legs. The parasite can move under the skin at a rate of 2-3 cm per day, causing itching, burning, and redness.”

He emphasizes that this nodule is almost painless and can disappear and reappear elsewhere. The ocular form occurs in approximately 10% of cases.

The doctor explains: "The conjunctiva, eyelid, eye socket, or even the eyeball are often affected. Symptoms include a feeling of a foreign body, eyelid swelling, pain, light sensitivity, and tearing. In some cases, the worm can be seen with the naked eye under the conjunctiva or in the vitreous humor."
