Nutritionist Dr. Irina Nikulina points out that an intense craving for sweets or pastries, even after a heavy meal, may be a sign of an internal imbalance in the body.
According to her, fast-absorbing carbohydrates are attractive to the body as a source of immediate energy, but their effect is short-lived and triggers new bouts of hunger.
She says: "Excessive consumption of these products can have serious consequences. The sudden spike in blood sugar stimulates the pancreas and may contribute to the development of insulin resistance. Refined carbohydrates also affect the beneficial bacteria in the gut, creating a favorable environment for the growth of harmful bacteria, which can lead to problems with digestion, skin, and the immune system."
The expert points out that intense cravings for sweets can be linked to several factors, including micronutrient deficiencies, chronic stress, lack of sleep, and eating disorders. Strict diets also play a role, as they can cause psychological dependence and increase the risk of relapse.
According to her, regularly consuming excessive amounts of refined carbohydrates can lead to weight gain, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and digestive problems. However, it's not necessary to completely abstain from sweets; rather, it's important to maintain a balance and control their quantity within a balanced diet.
To reduce cravings for sweets, the expert recommends following a balanced diet rich in protein, fats, and complex carbohydrates, regulating sleep, and reducing stress levels. She also advises seeking healthy alternatives to usual sweets and avoiding strict restrictions that may exacerbate cravings.
The expert emphasizes that a specialist doctor should be consulted if there is a strong craving for sweets accompanied by a decline in health, in order to diagnose the condition and rule out any metabolic disorders.
