Social media platform X has launched an instant messaging app called XChat, which is now available for pre-order on the App Store and is scheduled to be available for download starting April 17.

As reported by Engadget on Sunday, X CEO Elon Musk previously announced plans to update the direct message feature in mid-2025, including the implementation of encryption and a new architecture.

However, instead of just updating the messaging features within the platform, the company is now introducing XChat as an instant messaging app for X users.

Through this application, users can send messages with other X users and make calls across devices.

XChat features end-to-end encryption to keep conversations secure. Furthermore, users can edit and delete messages for all participants.

Other embedded features include blocking screenshots and messages that can disappear automatically within five minutes.

The app also allows users to create large chat groups with up to 481 members. In its App Store description, XChat states that it will not display ads or track user activity.

Current iPhone and iPad users can pre-order XChat to have the app automatically installed when it officially releases.
