2026 World Cup: Mexico says it is ready to host the Iranian team

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has stated that Mexico is willing to host the Iranian national football team during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The head of state spoke at her morning press conference in Mexico City, stating that Mexico had "no problem" allowing the Iranian team to remain in the country after the United States objected to the players establishing their training camp there.

"The United States does not want the Iranian national team to spend the night on their territory. They asked us if, since they were to play their three matches there, they could spend the night in Mexico. And we answered yes, without any problem. It poses no problem for us," said Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico.

The Mexican president added that Iranian officials were considering using the northern border city of Tijuana as the team's base camp during the tournament. "They are considering staying in Tijuana so they can spend the night there and travel to the matches they will play in the United States," she said.

Iran had initially planned to train in Tucson, Arizona, but transferring its base to Mexico emerged as an option amid uncertainty related to the war in the Middle East and security concerns.
