Scientists have studied the effects of polystyrene nanoparticles on the body. These are microscopic plastic fragments that form when plastic packaging and containers break down. Experiments have shown that these particles cause significant damage to the kidneys: damage markers rise, inflammatory responses increase, reactive oxygen species accumulate, and cell death increases.

Consuming curcumin, a biologically active substance found in turmeric, significantly reduced these pathological processes caused by the entry of nanoplastic particles into the body. This compound inhibited the PI3K/AKT/NF-κB signaling pathway, which is associated with inflammation and cellular stress, restored the balance of proteins regulating cell survival, and reduced DNA damage.

The researchers assert that curcumin possesses strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and can be considered a potential means of protecting against kidney cell damage caused by plastic nanoparticles, noting that their findings are based on laboratory experiments and further research is needed to confirm this effect on humans.
