A Syrian soldier was killed and 12 others were injured in a car bomb explosion in the capital, Damascus

The Syrian Ministry of Defense announced on Tuesday the death of a soldier and the injury of others with varying wounds as a result of a car bomb explosion in the Bab Sharqi area of the capital, Damascus.

The Ministry of Defense’s Media and Communications Department said in a statement, “One of the Syrian Arab Army groups discovered an explosive device prepared for detonation near one of the Ministry of Defense buildings in the Bab Sharqi area of Damascus.”

She noted that “the device was dealt with immediately and an attempt was made to dismantle it before a car bomb exploded in the same area, resulting in the martyrdom of a soldier and injuries to others of varying severity.”

The Syrian News Agency (SANA) quoted the Director of Ambulance and Emergency Services at the Ministry of Health, Najib al-Naasan, as saying that the car explosion resulted in 12 injuries, who were transferred to nearby hospitals in the area, and the necessary medical procedures were provided to the injured.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that a number of people were injured, including one seriously, in an explosion that occurred in a car in the Bab Sharqi area, west of the Armaments Administration in the capital Damascus.

The Observatory said that following the explosion, security forces imposed a tight security cordon around the site and launched a campaign of arrests targeting a number of those who tried to photograph the scene of the incident. It explained that ambulances rushed to the area to transport the injured to hospitals, while security investigations continued to uncover the circumstances of the incident.

Since the new authority came to power in Damascus under President Ahmed al-Sharaa after the overthrow of former President Bashar al-Assad in December 2014, Damascus has witnessed occasional similar limited incidents, including a car explosion in Damascus in August that did not result in any injuries.

In June 2025, a suicide bombing inside a church in the Douilaa neighborhood of Damascus killed 25 people. The attack was claimed by a Sunni extremist group, while authorities attributed it to the “Islamic State” organization.
