A notice posted on the U.S. Treasury Department’s website showed that Albanese had been removed from the list of individuals subject to sanctions, after Washington had imposed sanctions on her in July 2025, which included blacklisting her and preventing her from using major credit cards or conducting banking transactions within the United States.
The sanctions came in response to statements and reports by Albanese criticizing US and Israeli policy regarding the war on the Gaza Strip, in which she accused Israel of committing genocide after the war launched by Israel on the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023.
As a UN rapporteur, she also recommended that the International Criminal Court consider prosecuting Israeli and American citizens and officials for war crimes, and prepared a report accusing major American companies of complicity in what she described as an "ongoing genocide campaign" in Gaza.
Federal Judge Richard Leon issued a ruling last week halting the implementation of the sanctions, arguing that the administration of US President Donald Trump likely violated Albanese's right to free speech guaranteed under the First Amendment to the US Constitution.
When announcing the sanctions against Albanese last July, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused her of engaging in "biased and malicious activities," "blatant anti-Semitism," and "supporting terrorism." Albanese denies the anti-Semitism allegations, which have also been leveled against her by Israel.
Israel began a genocidal war on the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023, with American support, leaving more than 72,000 martyrs and more than 172,000 wounded, and massive destruction affecting 90% of the civilian infrastructure.
