Cannes Film Festival 2026: 3 African women honored at the Women in Cinema gala

The Red Sea Film Foundation hosted the award winners and guests at its annual “Women in Cinema” gala, held near Cannes.

This event pays tribute to women who have contributed to the entertainment industry in various ways.

This year's six winners are Moroccan director Laïla Marrakchi, Nigerian actress and producer Genevieve Nnaji, Indian actress and singer Tara Sutaria, Rwandan director Marie-Clémentine Dusabejambo, Indonesian director Kamila Andani and Saudi actress and screenwriter Aixa Kay.

“I’m over the moon, I’m thrilled. I get along really well with the girls. I was so nervous before I got here. I didn’t really know what to expect. I was just a little intimidated,” said Sutaria.

But we met yesterday at lunch, and then of course there's the gala tonight, and we already get along wonderfully. We've kind of found each other.

Nnaji stated that it was her first time attending the Cannes Film Festival and that it had strengthened her desire to return with a film.

"The next time I come here, it will be with a film. It's kind of my dream, you know, so it's very important to me," she said.

Actress Demi Moore and director Chloé Zhao, who are part of the Cannes Film Festival jury this year, were also present at the event.

Other guests included Oscar winners Rami Malek and Alicia Vikander, as well as "Emily in Paris" actor Lucas Bravo.
