Elon Musk is planning a double move. The billionaire announced on Tuesday that he will be transferring the headquarters of SpaceX and his social network X from California to Texas.
In a few weeks, SpaceX is due to leave Hawthorne in California and set up shop at the company's rocket launch site, called Starbase, in Texas, not far from the city of Boca Chica, on the border with Mexico.
As the social network X bids farewell to San Francisco for Austin, one of Texas's largest cities, in the coming months, the shift is driven by California's adoption of a transgender law on Monday.
Elon Musk opposes this new provision which requires schools to remain silent about a student's sexual orientation or gender identity.
While the text is presented as a step forward in protecting the rights of LGBT+ people, the billionaire believes, on the contrary, that it is the antithesis of the typical American family model.
With these headquarters relocations, California stands to lose thousands of jobs. Some, however, believe the decision is also linked to Texas's perceived favorable tax regulations.
