Israel is transforming from a steadfast ally into an increasing political liability for American Democrats

The American political scene is witnessing a rapid shift in the view of Israel within the Democratic Party, amid escalating popular and official criticism of the continuation of American military support for Tel Aviv, in light of the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip and escalating regional tensions.

Norman: The Palestinian issue has become an increasingly sensitive political and moral test within the United States.

According to a report published by writer Julia Norman on the Common Dreams website, unconditional American support for Israel is no longer seen within broad circles of Democrats as a firm political commitment, but has gradually turned into a moral and political burden that threatens the party electorally.

Norman noted that this shift was clearly demonstrated during the US Senate vote last April on resolutions aimed at preventing the transfer of hundreds of millions of dollars worth of offensive weapons to Israel, including heavy bombs and military bulldozers believed to be used to destroy Palestinian homes and infrastructure in Gaza and Lebanon.

Although a large number of Democrats supported those resolutions, prominent leaders within the party still refuse to endorse legislation calling for a halt to US arms shipments to Israel, which the writer considered an increasing contradiction with the ongoing shifts in American public opinion.

She added that recent polls have shown an increasing number of Americans who believe that a confrontation with Iran serves Israeli interests more than American interests, at a time when popular opposition is growing to funding foreign wars and the economic and human losses they cause.

The report noted that the division over Israel is no longer limited to Democrats, but has also begun to appear within the Republican Party, where conservative voices have emerged that consider unlimited support for Israel to be incompatible with the “America First” rhetoric promoted by President Donald Trump.

Norman: The division over Israel is no longer limited to Democrats, but has also begun to appear within the Republican Party, where conservative voices have emerged arguing that unlimited support for Israel contradicts Trump's "America First" rhetoric.

Norman believes that the Democrats are facing a growing crisis with their grassroots supporters, especially among young people and progressives, because of the party's continued support for Israel despite increasing criticism of the war in Gaza and what international human rights organizations describe as widespread violations against Palestinian civilians.

The report also referred to an incident in which it said Israeli forces detained foreign and American activists in international waters while they were participating in a movement to break the blockade imposed on Gaza, noting that the official American and media reaction was very limited, despite the sensitivity of the issue.

The writer added that internal assessments of the Democratic Party now indicate that the US administration’s supportive stance towards Israel during the war in Gaza has harmed the party electorally, especially after losing some of the votes of young, Arab and Muslim voters in the last elections.

Norman argued that the scenes of widespread destruction in Gaza, the ongoing blockade, and the targeting of civilian infrastructure made it difficult for American politicians to continue justifying military support for Israel under the banner of “self-defense.”

The report concluded by noting that the Palestinian issue has become an increasingly sensitive political and moral test within the United States, and that continued American support for Israel puts the Democratic Party in direct confrontation with broad segments of its voters who have become more critical of Israeli policies than ever before.
