A team of scientists in Russia has begun clinical trials of a new system for analyzing intestinal microbes that is useful in combating obesity and digestive disorders.
Experts from the Scientific and Technological Institute of Metabolic Health at Moscow's First State Medical University noted that the new system is based on the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technology, delivers results on the same day, and helps doctors design treatment tailored to each person's gut microbiome composition.
Vladimir Ivashkin, an academician and researcher at the Russian Academy of Sciences, explained that the new system assesses the quantitative composition of intestinal microbes, including pathogenic bacteria and Candida fungi present in the intestines, and at a low cost, this technology can be used to treat gastrointestinal diseases, immune disorders, anxiety disorders, obesity, and other disorders related to the gut-brain axis and the gut-immune axis.
For his part, Russian researcher Roman Maslennikov pointed out that determining the amount of bacteria present in the intestines will help in prescribing more effective drugs for those suffering from obesity and digestive system diseases, and prescribing personalized treatments for each patient based on probiotics, stressing that research is still ongoing in this field.
