Rwanda: A research center to train in minimally invasive surgery

Rwanda has inaugurated IRCAD, the first Research Institute against Digestive Cancers in Africa.

In some regions, the population faces a lack of medical care. To meet the demand for surgical care, the center in Rwanda trains healthcare professionals from 25 countries.

“ On the African continent, more than 95% of the population does not have access to medical and surgical procedures. This is also one of the solutions provided here in Rwanda, in this center specifically serving the African continent ,” explains the director of IRCAD Africa, David Kamanda.

Some African countries still resort to traditional surgery, requiring long and painful operations.

IRCAD trains professionals in minimally invasive surgery, a modern medical technology that minimizes pain and trauma suffered by patients, thereby shortening hospital stays, reducing the risk of bleeding and accelerating recovery.

Founded in 1994, IRCAD has become a world leader in teaching and promoting minimally invasive surgery.

The introduction of minimally invasive surgery in low and middle-income countries should help reduce mortality associated with surgery in hospitals where health infrastructure is inadequate.
