Samsung patents two roll-up phone designs

Samsung has just filed two patents for rollable phones, most of which feature design concepts that extend the screen outward when unfolded. But Samsung's second design goes a step further—the screen is completely hidden inside the body when not in use, only popping out when the sides of the device are pulled apart.

A patent doesn't guarantee a product release. However, Samsung's Display division has previously shown rollable OLED prototypes at CES and MWC, so this concept isn't just a theory, Gizchina reported.

The first design uses a more common rollable phone approach. When folded, it looks like a regular smartphone. When pulled horizontally, the screen extends outward, creating a wider viewing area for multitasking , gaming, or watching videos.

Essentially, it's an attempt to provide a larger screen when needed, much like the goal of a foldable phone, but achieved by rolling, not folding. There's no hinge, no crease in the screen.
