Xiaomi offers free service for devices damaged by floods in China

Xiaomi has just announced a free repair program for devices damaged by heavy rain and flooding that hit several areas in China this week.

The program runs from May 22 to June 20 and covers Jiangxi, Hunan, and Hubei provinces — the three worst-hit regions.

Water damage is typically excluded from warranties and is rarely covered by manufacturers. However, this time, Xiaomi has removed that exclusion entirely.

The Gizchina website reported on Sunday local time that standard warranties from almost all major brands explicitly do not cover water damage.

Even devices with IP68 certification are typically still subject to rigorous inspection for flood damage — since that protection is intended for normal splashes of water, not prolonged submersion in floodwater.
