Senegalese President Bssirou Diomaye Faye appointed a renowned economist as Prime Minister on Monday.
Dressed in white in the images taken during his appointment, the technocrat Ahmadou Al Aminou Lo was secretary general in the first government formed by Mr. Faye, in power since April 2024.
The Senegalese president appointed him after unexpectedly dismissing his former mentor, Ousmane Sonko, last Friday, with whom he had disagreements.
He asserts that the new holder of this position has the necessary expertise to extricate Senegal from an overwhelming debt.
Ahmadou Al Aminou Lo worked at the Central Bank of West African States.
Senegal is buckling under the weight of a colossal debt amounting to 132% of GDP. When Faye and Sonko came to power in 2024, they accused the government of former President Macky Sall of having concealed part of the debt, which led to the suspension of a $1.8 billion IMF aid program agreed upon in 2023.
The Senegalese Parliament is due to vote on Tuesday on the appointment of Sonko as president of the National Assembly, a decision that has provoked anger from the opposition, which has called it a coup.
