A study conducted by scientists from the Federal University of Sao Paulo showed that swimming is more beneficial to heart health than running.
In an animal experiment, scientists compared the effect of two types of exercise – running and swimming – on the cardiovascular system. They observed that both types of exercise improved the body's endurance equally, with oxygen consumption increasing by more than 5%, but only swimming led to significant changes in the heart itself, namely an increase in cardiac muscle mass and an improvement in its ability to contract.
Data analysis showed that swimming has a stronger effect than running on the activity of microRNA, molecules that regulate cell growth and blood vessel formation, and protect the heart from damage. Researchers believe these mechanisms make the heart stronger and more resistant to stress.
Scientists noted that both types of exercise are beneficial to health, but swimming may provide additional benefits, especially in cases of cardiac recovery.
Many health experts confirm that swimming is one of the best sports for people with diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, and also for patients with joint problems.
