The 63rd Africa Day celebrates the continent's growing place in the world

African leaders, political figures, and international partners gathered Monday in Addis Ababa, at the headquarters of the African Union, for the 63rd Africa Day. The celebration focused on the unity and integration of the continent, against the backdrop of the AU's development ambitions and long-term vision.

On site, speeches mixed optimism about Africa's growing place in the world with calls to strengthen the role of youth and innovation.

“Our continent is booming, slowly and smoothly, but with conviction and determination. Africa’s role and position are being reaffirmed day after day on the world stage: today a member of the G20, tomorrow, we hope, two permanent members of the UN Security Council. The continent’s global GDP is expected to reach $10 trillion within a few years. The youth of this continent are the engine that all other continents look to with envy. Let us therefore renew our faith in the strength of African unity and in the creative potential of our continent and our people,” said Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission.

The young Africans present at the celebrations stressed the need for innovation, integration and stronger African representation within global institutions.

“Over the next decade, I want to see Africa become a global player, with its own distinct position, where it will demonstrate the continent’s capabilities in development, integration, and innovation. And I want to see young Africans also leading global institutions; so we want this African leadership to be expressed through our diversity. As we are united within this institution, the African Union, we want to ensure that our unity is reflected on the world stage,” explained a young African representative.

This day also highlighted Africa's growing international partnerships. China is among Africa's key global partners, with relations expanding into numerous sectors in recent years.
