World badminton legend Viktor Axelsen has expressed doubts about the effectiveness of the Badminton World Federation's (BWF) plan to implement a 15-point scoring system in three games, as it is believed to reduce the drama and tactics in matches.
According to the former men's singles player from Denmark, the 21-point system currently in use is still the best format because it gives players more room to build their rhythm and stage comebacks when they are behind.
"I think we'll lose a bit of drama and tactics. I love the history of a match; it can have ups and downs," Axelsen said during a meet-and-greet event "Celebrating the Legacy of Viktor Axelsen" at The Westin.
The 2020 and 2024 Olympic gold medalists said that in a 21-point system, players still have a chance to come back even if they are significantly behind early in the game.
"Even if you're down 11-5 or something, you can still come back. It's very difficult if you only play for 15 points," said Axelsen, who retired last April.
