The World Boxing Association has elevated the status of welterweight (66.7kg) world champion Rolando "Rolly" Romero to super champion after considering the American boxer's impressive achievements.
"The decision was made by the WBA Championship Committee following an official request from Romero's team and after reviewing his track record as a WBA champion in three divisions," the WBA said in a statement on its official website, which was monitored.
Super champion status means Romero is considered one of the best fighters in the welterweight division. He also has more flexibility in his mandatory fight schedule than a regular champion.
Romero first captured the WBA interim lightweight (145.6lb) title in August 2020 after defeating Jackson Marinez and successfully defended the title once.
He then won the WBA super lightweight (140 lb) world title in May 2023 by defeating Ismael Barroso. Most recently, Romero secured the WBA welterweight world title after defeating Ryan Garcia in May 2025.
