The World Boxing Council (WBC) has announced that super-cruise world champion Kevin Lerena will face a mandatory title defense against Belgian boxer Ryad Merhy on May 30 in Belgium.
"This bout is a significant moment for the WBC super cruiserweight division, pitting the defending champion against an experienced challenger who will be competing in front of their home crowd," the WBC said on its website..
Lerena enters the ring as the defending champion after winning the world championship belt in 2025. The 32-year-old South African boxer has a professional record of 31 wins, 15 of which were by knockout, and three losses.
She also has a positive record against Merhy, having won by unanimous decision in their first meeting in 2023 in South Africa. That victory marked a significant milestone for Merhy as she maintained her position at the elite cruiserweight level.
Besides being known for having good fighting stamina, Lerena also has experience facing a number of top boxers.
Meanwhile, Merhy will use the advantage of fighting on home soil to avenge her previous defeat. The 32-year-old Belgian boxer boasts a professional record of 33 wins, 27 of which came by knockout, and three losses.
