A member of parliament from the Kurdistan Democratic Party: 48 people arrested and $1 billion seized in the anti-corruption campaign in Iraq

Iraqi parliament member Avista Mam Yahya announced that the anti-corruption campaign has resulted in the arrest of 48 people so far, and the seizure of nearly one billion dollars and large quantities of gold, real estate and other assets.

Avista Mam Yahya, from the Kurdistan Democratic Party bloc, told Rudaw Media Network that in the last phase alone, 21 people were arrested while three others escaped.

According to the parliamentarian, the investigations are being conducted "in complete secrecy" and the names of most of the accused have not been revealed to prevent them from trying to escape.

The campaign included several governorates, including Baghdad, Salah al-Din and Muthanna.

Avista Mam Yahya said, "The Integrity Commission is talking about more than 50 corruption cases in Baghdad province alone, and these cases include sovereign ministries such as the Interior and Defense ministries."

Regarding the funds and assets that were seized, she explained that "what has been seized so far is estimated at about one billion dollars, in addition to the confiscation of many properties, cars and valuable horses."

She also noted that two gold safes, valued at approximately $250 million, were found in the home of one of the accused, Bahaa al-Nouri.

Avista Mam Yahya stated that among those arrested were undersecretaries, directors-general, and members of parliament, noting that no Kurdish officials were among them so far. She added, "The names of more prominent figures are expected to be revealed later."

Regarding the Kurdistan Region's position, she said: "The Kurdistan Region has supported the federal government from the beginning and handed over three accused individuals," adding: "I am confident that if any other accused person is requested, the region will have the same position and will not protect the corrupt."

The investigations into the files are still ongoing and the process is expected to take several months.

It is worth noting that on Sunday, June 28, 2026, Iraqi security forces, supported by the Air Force, began a large-scale operation in the Green Zone and several governorates, which resulted in the arrest of a number of senior officials and members of parliament on corruption charges, most notably Muthanna al-Samarrai, head of the “Azm Alliance,” and Ali Ma’araj al-Bahadli, the Iraqi Deputy Minister of Oil.
