In the Comoros, six former prime ministers urged President Azali Assoumani to allow his predecessor, Ahmed Abdallah Sambi, 67, who is currently imprisoned, to receive medical treatment abroad.
Referring to his health condition, which is "deteriorating alarmingly," this is disputed by the Comorian justice system, which declared this week that the examinations undergone by the former head of state did not reveal that he was in a "critical situation likely to endanger his life."
Ahmed Abdallah Sambi led the Comoros from 2006 to 2011. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2022 for high treason related to the sale of passports to stateless persons, following a trial that critics called a "judicial farce." He has been under house arrest for eight years.
