The Czech Republic national team had to be content with sharing points with South Africa after a 1-1 draw in their second Group A match of the 2026 World Cup at Atlanta Stadium, United States.
The Czech Republic had initially had the upper hand after taking an early lead through Michal Sadilek. However, their victory was dashed when Teboho Mokoena equalized from the penalty spot.
This draw makes the competition in Group A even tighter. The Czech Republic and South Africa are currently in second and third place, respectively, with their chances of qualifying to be decided in the final group match.
The Czech Republic immediately took the initiative from the start. Just six minutes into the match, Michal Sadilek broke the deadlock after receiving a through ball inside the penalty area and unleashing a powerful left-footed shot that left Ronwen Williams unstoppable.
South Africa tried to respond. A dangerous chance came in the 14th minute when Oswin Appollis unleashed a volley that deflected off a Czech defender and nearly beat Matej Kovar. Nevertheless, the Czechs held their 1-0 lead until halftime.
