Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Nezar Patria said that regulations related to the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in Indonesia have been proposed to be drafted into law.
Nezar said the proposal to create an AI law was submitted by the Indonesian House of Representatives' Legislative Body in a meeting with the Ministry of Communication and Digital last week.
"They informally proposed that it would be a good idea to review the preparations for the Artificial Intelligence Law so that the regulatory position of AI can be strengthened and provide legal certainty going forward," Nezar said when met after the Indonesia AI Ethics Summit in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Regulations in the form of laws are considered to provide a more solid foundation for regulating the increasingly rapid development of AI, while ensuring legal certainty for investors and providing clear boundaries regarding the risks of its use and development.
However, Nezar emphasized that the government is currently prioritizing the completion of the Presidential Regulation on the National Artificial Intelligence Roadmap, a draft of which has been submitted to the State Secretariat for the president's signature.
