The death toll from Ebola fever in the Democratic Republic of Congo has risen to 267, according to data from the country's Ministry of Communication and Information.
The ministry had previously announced that the number of confirmed Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo had exceeded 1,000.
The ministry stated on its X social media page: “1048 confirmed cases, 267 deaths, and 112 recoveries… Mortality rate: 25.5%.”
The World Health Organization had previously classified the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda as a public health emergency of international concern. The organization assesses the regional risk of the virus spreading as high.
Ebola is a life-threatening disease, and the virus is transmitted through direct physical contact and contact with bodily fluids secreted by infected individuals.
The current outbreak is extremely difficult to contain and control, partly because there is still no vaccine or specific treatment for the rare Bundibugyo strain causing this wave of Ebola virus.
