Egypt has achieved a new global milestone by entering the Guinness Book of World Records after successfully registering the largest number of blood donors in just 12 hours.
The Ministry of Health and Population announced that the Guinness World Records had recognized this achievement after the national blood donation campaign, implemented by the Ministry represented by the Central Administration for Blood Donation Operations, coinciding with the celebration of World Blood Donor Day, succeeded in registering more than 15,000 citizens to donate blood within 12 hours.
The official spokesman for the Ministry of Health and Population, Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, said that this record number reflects the success of the state’s efforts in spreading the culture of voluntary blood donation, and enhancing the safe strategic stock of blood and its derivatives, which contributes to providing treatment needs and saving the lives of patients and the injured.
He explained that achieving this accomplishment was the result of the integration of efforts of the health affairs directorates, blood banks, and medical, administrative and organizational teams in all governorates, in addition to the great turnout of citizens, which reflected the rise in community awareness of the importance of blood donation as a humanitarian act that contributes to saving lives.
Abdel Ghaffar stressed that the adoption of the Guinness World Record represents a new addition to the record of achievements made by the Egyptian state in the health sector, and reflects its ability to implement large-scale national initiatives in accordance with international standards, combining organizational efficiency and community participation.
June 14th of each year marks World Blood Donor Day, which was established by the World Health Organization with the aim of promoting a culture of regular voluntary blood donation and raising awareness of the importance of providing a safe and sufficient supply of blood and its derivatives to hospitals and medical centers.
Regular voluntary blood donation is one of the main pillars for ensuring the availability of blood units needed to treat accident patients, major surgical procedures, bleeding cases, cancer patients, thalassemia, and chronic blood diseases, as well as supporting emergency and critical care services.
