Panama vs England Preview: The Three Lions eye Group L glory

The England national team will play its final match in Group L of the 2026 World Cup against the Panama national team at the New York Stadium in New Jersey, United States.

England, who have already secured their place in the round of 32, will still be aiming for a win to finish the first phase as Group L winners. Only a win, and of course, hoping for a favorable result from the other match between Croatia and Ghana, can take England to the top of the group.

In Group L, England and Ghana, both tied on four points in first and second place, are the only two teams already guaranteed to advance to the knockout stage. Third-placed Croatia with three points maintains their hopes of securing a place, while bottom-placed Panama is already eliminated.

At the 2026 World Cup, Thomas Tuchel's side kicked off the tournament with a 4-1 victory over Croatia, but were unable to replicate their positive result in their second match, being held to a 0-0 draw by Ghana.

Meanwhile, Panama, playing in just their second World Cup, has yet to earn a point in this major tournament. In their first two matches, they suffered 0-1 defeats to Ghana and Croatia.

If England wins the group, they will face one of the best third-placed teams from Groups E, H, I, J, or K, while the runner-up from this group will face the runner-up from Group K, which is currently occupied by Portugal.

If the third-placed team from Group L qualifies as one of the eight best teams, they will face the winner of Group K, currently occupied by Colombia.
