Eugène Rwamucyo returns to court on Tuesday before the Paris Assize Court in France. The doctor has appealed his 27-year prison sentence for complicity in genocide and complicity in crimes against humanity, related to the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
At 67, Eugène Rwamucyo wants to be acquitted. But he will have to prove before the appeals judges that he has no connection to the massacres that killed more than 800,000 people in Rwanda—Tutsis and moderate Hutus.
New trial, new strategy. Unlike his initial appearance, the accused has bolstered his defense, increasing it from two to seven lawyers. They will attempt to extricate their client from the case.
The accused is accused of burying tens of thousands of bodies in mass graves in Butare, executing the wounded, and inciting the population to attack Tutsis. His appeal trial is scheduled to conclude on July 17. He faces a life sentence.
