The match ended goalless, Spain's attack failed to penetrate Cape Verde

The Spanish national team failed to win their opening Group H match of the 2026 World Cup after being held to a goalless draw by Cape Verde at Atlanta Stadium.
Despite appearing dominant and continuing to attack throughout the match, La Furia Roja were unable to penetrate Cape Verde's solid defense.

This result leaves the 2026 World Cup Group H race still open. Spain must quickly improve the effectiveness of their attack, while Cape Verde gained confidence after holding off one of the world title contenders.

From the opening minute, Spain dominated the match, possessing nearly 80 percent of the ball. However, Cape Verde's tight defensive strategy made it difficult for Luis de la Fuente's team to create space in dangerous areas.

Spain's first chance came in the 13th minute through a Pedri cross that was almost met by their forward, but was still cleared by Cape Verde defender Pico Lopes.

The Matadors threatened again in the 30th minute through Marc Cucurella's volley, but the ball still soared over the crossbar.

Cape Verde, who were mostly defending, occasionally attempted counterattacks. One chance came in the 37th minute when Dailon Livramento attempted a long-range shot after capitalizing on a Rodri error, but the ball went wide.
