Tunisia reportedly sacks coach midway through 2026 World Cup

The Tunisian Football Federation (FTF) has reportedly fired coach Sabri Lamouchi amidst the 2026 World Cup, after Tunisia suffered a crushing 1-5 defeat to Sweden in their opening Group F match.

"A formal agreement has been reached to dismiss coach Sabri Lamouchi. The process of appointing Mondher Kebaier as interim national team coach is currently underway," the FTF said in a statement, as reported by The Guardian on Tuesday.

Lamouchi was forced to end his tenure just months after being appointed Tunisia coach in January 2026.

According to a report by The Guardian, the 54-year-old French coach was already under pressure after Tunisia also suffered a crushing 0-5 defeat to Belgium in a pre-World Cup friendly in Brussels.

The defeat to Sweden worsened Tunisia's Group F situation. The team nicknamed El Aigles de Carthage will next face Japan on Sunday (June 21) at the same stadium in Guadalupe where they lost to Sweden. Tunisia will then close out the group stage against the Netherlands in Kansas City.

Lamouchi is no stranger to the World Cup stage. He previously managed Ivory Coast at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, but failed to lead the team beyond the group stage.

With a mid-tournament change of coach, Tunisia hopes to bounce back quickly and maintain their chances of advancing to the next round of the 2026 World Cup.
