US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he does not care about the fate of the ongoing talks with Iran, hours after he confirmed that Tehran “really wants to reach an agreement” with his administration, in statements that reflected a divergence in the American position regarding the progress of the negotiations.
In an interview with CNBC, Trump said: “I don’t care if it’s over, honestly. I really don’t care. I don’t give a damn. If it’s over, it’s over, and if it’s not over… I think Iran has taken too long.”
He added: “Honestly, I think it was starting to get very boring. They were giving us what we needed, but I think they handled the negotiations badly. It took too long, and I thought they were just stalling.”
Despite these statements, Trump later reiterated that talks with Iran were still ongoing, writing on his “Truth Social” platform that “the Iranian regime really wants to reach an agreement, and it will be good for the United States and its allies,” noting that negotiations were “progressing at a rapid pace.”
He also said in other statements that a possible agreement with Iran could be reached “within the next week,” explaining that the goal includes reaching an understanding to extend the ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, as well as setting a framework for broader negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program, although he indicated that it has not yet been decided.
Trump added that "there are still some points that need to be resolved," but stressed that "things are moving in the right direction."
The US president also indicated that he had discussed the matter with officials in his administration during a meeting in the White House operations room, to discuss the path of possible understandings with Tehran.
These developments come after a previous announcement of “major combat operations” against Iran in February, followed by a ceasefire, before unstable rounds of negotiations began between the two sides, marred by a temporary halt and then a gradual resumption of talks, amid conflicting statements about the level of progress.
In contrast, US sources said that US forces carried out “self-defense” strikes targeting Iranian radar sites and drone command centers, in what was described as a response to escalating regional threats.
According to the announced developments, talks between Washington and Tehran have recently resumed at an accelerated pace, with repeated American assurances that reaching an agreement “is still possible within a short period,” despite the continued tension and instability in the negotiating process.
