US President Donald Trump said on Monday that the United States had reached an agreement with Iran to end the war in the Middle East, stressing that the full text of the agreement would be published after the official signing on Friday, noting that the Strait of Hormuz would be fully opened once the agreement came into effect.
Trump added, upon his arrival in the French city of Evian to participate in the G7 summit, that “an agreement with Iran has been reached,” noting that the detailed announcement will be after the official procedures, while confirming that the strategic shipping lane will be fully operational again by the end of the week.
In the same context, Trump said that his deputy, JD Vance, would travel to Switzerland to participate in the official signing ceremony of the agreement between the United States and Iran, noting that the signing had taken place digitally earlier, and that the official procedures would be completed in Geneva, without confirming his personal participation in the ceremony.
For his part, French President Emmanuel Macron said that the memorandum of understanding signed by the United States and Iran to end the four-month war represents “a very important step for peace,” stressing that it will contribute to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, during a joint press conference with the US President on the sidelines of the G7 summit.
The information indicates that the agreement stipulates opening the Strait of Hormuz for 60 days without fees, as part of measures aimed at ensuring the continuation of international navigation, along with political and security arrangements that are being completed during the transitional phase.
A US official also clarified that Israel's withdrawal from Lebanon is not part of the terms of the agreement, stressing that Israel has the right to defend itself against any attacks launched by the Lebanese group Hezbollah.
Iranian praise for the agreement
In Tehran, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that the understanding reached with the United States on ending the war could constitute an “honorable” document for Iran if all its provisions are implemented correctly, explaining that he had conducted extensive consultations on the agreement, and that the vast majority of members of the Supreme National Security Council supported the memorandum of understanding.
Pezeshkian added that what has been achieved represents an important step towards ending the war and starting the path of negotiations, noting that the final agreement has not yet been finalized, and expressing his gratitude to the officials involved in the process, especially Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi.
In the same context, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi announced that the first round of negotiations between Iran and the United States will begin after the official signing of the memorandum of understanding between the two countries, explaining that a preliminary meeting is likely to be held on Friday in Switzerland between the heads of the negotiating teams, with the actual negotiations to begin later after the agreement is signed.
Iranian media quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi as saying that the text of the memorandum of understanding has been finalized and is scheduled to be signed on Friday in Geneva.
For his part, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that the understanding between Washington and Tehran includes a halt to military operations on various fronts, including the Lebanese arena, within the framework of a broader agreement to end regional escalation.
The information indicates that the agreement stipulates a ceasefire and the reopening of sea lanes, while keeping contentious issues such as the Iranian nuclear program and sanctions within subsequent negotiations during an initial implementation period of sixty days.
The clashes between the two sides began on February 28, before expanding to include several regional arenas, leading to a temporary ceasefire on April 8, as a prelude to the current understanding process.
No final official responses have yet been issued by the relevant regional parties regarding the details of the agreement and its implementation mechanisms.
