Uganda: Ebola epidemic receding, according to health authorities

The signs are positive in Uganda. After weeks of concern, the Ebola epidemic appears to be receding, according to President Yoweri Museveni.

In his address to the nation on Wednesday, dedicated to assessing the health crisis, the Ugandan president welcomed the absence of new cases while calling on the population to remain vigilant.

It has now been five days since any new cases have been reported. It seems the Ebola outbreak is beginning to slow down. That is why, I urge you, we still have much to do. Let us be extremely serious. We can no longer afford to take this situation lightly. Listen carefully and act. This virus is easy to contain. We have controlled it before, and we can do it again, he said.

It should be noted that Kampala declared an outbreak on May 15, following the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Ugandan Ministry of Health has since confirmed 19 cases, 14 of which are linked to the DRC, as well as two deaths.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who was visiting Uganda on Monday, praised the health response to the outbreak imported from the DRC. He also called for the reopening of the border between the two countries.
