The Uruguayan national team has confirmed its participation in the 2026 World Cup, despite often being overlooked as one of the South American nation's magical powers in the four-yearly event.
FIFA's website stated on Wednesday that Uruguay is relying on a mix of experienced players and a new generation under coach Marcelo Bielsa to compete in Group H.
They entered the 2026 World Cup, held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico as one of South America's strongest representatives. The national team secured a spot after passing through the CONMEBOL Qualifiers, known as one of the most difficult paths to the finals.
Under Bielsa's guidance, the national team nicknamed La Celeste was able to secure a direct ticket to the final round.
FIFA noted that Uruguay qualified directly after performing competitively throughout the qualifying phase and recording several important results, including victories against Argentina and Brazil, which have long been symbols of South America.
The 2026 World Cup will be Uruguay's 15th appearance at the world's biggest and most prestigious football tournament.
