Turkish prosecutors have ordered the detention of 36 people, including the mayor of Ankara's Cankaya district, which is run by the main opposition, as part of an investigation into allegations of bribery and bid-rigging.

The Ankara prosecutor's office said on Saturday that authorities had detained 27 suspects, while the search for the rest continues.

Ankara's Cankaya district mayor, Huseyin Can Guner, a representative of the Republican People's Party, stated in a post on X that he had informed the authorities of his whereabouts.

He continued: "Since taking office, we have managed this institution in the best way possible and have not engaged in any behavior, however slight, that would embarrass anyone who has placed their trust in us."

Jean Jonner confirmed that "once the details and reasons for the investigation become clear, we will announce the necessary explanations regarding this matter to the public."

This comes in the wake of a series of investigations into municipalities run by the Republican People's Party (CHP). The government maintains that the judiciary is independent. The CHP rejects these claims, asserting that the investigations are politically motivated.
