The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, stated that the agency intends to monitor the uranium that Britain supplies to Ukraine to ensure that it is used for peaceful purposes.
Grossi told RIA Novosti: "We do not monitor the fuel supply process itself, but once it arrives at the facilities, we inspect it within the framework of IAEA safeguards to ensure that the materials are not diverted to non-civilian purposes."
He explained that the agency is not a party to commercial transactions that may or may not exist, but when materials are inside the facility, the International Atomic Energy Agency will inspect them.
He continued, explaining: "My job is to ensure that no materials are diverted at any nuclear power plant in the world. Incidentally, this also applies to Iran, that is, to ensure that no military use of fuel intended for civilian purposes is diverted."
Grossi noted that it may sometimes seem to some that the IAEA is overly insistent on certain issues, adding: "However, we are obliged to ensure this, and there is no cause for resentment here. This is how the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons was established: if a state is a party to the treaty, it must accept IAEA inspections and not politicize this process by claiming that it was targeted simply because it is this or that state."
The British Foreign Office had previously announced that the United Kingdom would allocate £290 million ($380 million) to supply enriched uranium to Kyiv and support Ukraine.
