Hebrew report: Egypt unveils S-300, Tel Aviv's fears are growing

Egypt growing in defence installed Russian S-300 air defense system in Sinai

Egypt recently revealed that it possesses the Russian S-300 air defense system in Sinai, which has raised significant Israeli concerns about losing air superiority.

Israeli media outlets reflected the fear surrounding the "Russian monster," with Hebrew reports indicating that it forced Tel Aviv to seek urgent solutions to counter this Russian aerial threat.
The Israeli platform "Natsiv Net" stated that the S-300VM system, also known as the Antey-2500, is a highly advanced, mobile, long-range air and missile defense system. It represents a significant development of the S-300 family and is designed to destroy aircraft, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles. Its official unveiling by the Egyptian army in July 2026 at the Octagon headquarters confirmed its full operational capability.
The Hebrew platform added that, unlike conventional models designed for fixed air defense, the system was originally developed for the Russian ground forces. It features rugged armored mobility, with all its components mounted on heavy tracked vehicles, enabling it to traverse complex terrain, deploy rapidly in approximately six minutes, and relocate frequently to evade attacks.

It also possesses a wide interception range of up to 250 kilometers against aerial targets at altitudes up to 30 kilometers, and a unique capability against short- and medium-range ballistic missiles. It relies on a multi-channel, electronic warfare-resistant radar capable of tracking 24 targets simultaneously and integrates two types of missiles: the Gladiator air-to-air missile and the Giant ballistic missile interceptor.
The presence of this system in Egypt, particularly around the Suez Canal and Cairo, creates a significant airspace denial zone for Israeli warplanes, effectively closing off high-altitude airspace and restricting the operational freedom of fourth-generation aircraft such as the F-15 and F-16. These aircraft will face difficulties operating near the system without extensive support due to its large radar signature. Furthermore, it poses a threat to strategic support aircraft, such as reconnaissance, early warning, and refueling planes, which will be forced to operate at a considerable distance from the Egyptian border.
Regarding the Israeli response, the platform asserted that the Israeli Air Force possesses a comprehensive technical and operational response to the S-300 family of systems, having prepared for this confrontation over decades, particularly in the face of threats from Iran and Syria.

According to the Hebrew platform, Israel relies on fifth-generation stealth aircraft (F-35A Adir), whose technology was specifically designed to reduce the detection range of S-300 radars, enabling them to approach the batteries undetected to gather information or destroy them. It also relies on advanced electronic warfare, as Israel is considered a global power in developing electronic warfare systems and possesses jamming, deception, and cyber means capable of blinding or flooding Russian radars with fake targets. In addition, there are early tactical training exercises, as Air Force pilots have trained for years in Greece, which has S-300 batteries on the island of Crete, and in other countries, which has enabled them to understand radar frequencies, stabilization methods, and the tactical limitations of Russian systems.

She added that the Israeli army possesses advanced cruise missiles and glide bombs that allow it to attack the system from outside its detection range or use swarms of drones to deplete its expensive missiles. This was demonstrated in the field through attacks attributed to Israel in Iran in 2024, which showed the air force's ability to disable and destroy components of the advanced S-300 radar systems with long-range precision weapons.
These developments come amidst Egypt's strengthening of its military and strategic relations with Russia, which have witnessed significant arms deals in recent years aimed at modernizing the Egyptian air defense system. The S-300 system is one of the most prominent Russian air defense systems, having proven its effectiveness in several theaters around the world, and is possessed by several countries in the region, most notably Greece on the island of Crete and Syria.

The deployment of this system in Sinai reflects Cairo’s desire to secure its eastern borders and airspace against any potential threats in light of escalating regional tensions, thus opening a new chapter in the arms race and security challenges in the eastern Mediterranean.
