French President Emmanuel Macron announced that he had arrived in Syria to reaffirm France's commitment to supporting a "united and sovereign Syria".
"I have come to reaffirm France's commitment to supporting the Syrian people in establishing a unified and sovereign Syria that will uphold pluralism and peace with its neighbors," Macron said at the start of his official visit to Syria on Monday.
Macron called for opening "a new chapter of peace and stability in the region," expressing his hope that Syria would play an important role in reducing tensions in the Middle East.
The French president announced that he intends to discuss the transitional period in Syria with his Syrian counterpart, Ahmed al-Sharaa.
Macron arrived in Syria accompanied by a delegation of French business leaders who will participate in a roundtable meeting dedicated to the reconstruction of Syria.
